Start with the work you need to finish, not the newest AI launch. A WordPress developer fixing a plugin, an SEO agency researching competitors and a shop owner sorting enquiries do not need the same agent. Use the contents to find your profession, then choose a candidate for one real task.
This guide includes agents and assistants because sometimes a sourced answer is all you need. "Unnecessary" means unnecessary for your task today, not a bad product. The role-based recommendations and sample briefs are our analysis and illustrative examples, not claimed client results or hands-on rankings.
First decide what the output should be
- A draft or explanation: start with an assistant you already have.
- Current evidence and a comparison: evaluate Perplexity or Gemini Deep Research; consider Grok when X is an important source.
- A change to a codebase: evaluate Claude Code, Codex or Cursor Agent.
- Actions or several output files: evaluate an execution agent such as Manus or Perplexity Computer, or a suitable browser experience such as ChatGPT Work or Comet.
- A fixed recurring process: compare a conventional automation before adding open-ended autonomy.

Text version of the diagram
Answer: your existing assistant. Evidence: Perplexity, Gemini Deep Research or Grok depending on sources. Code: Claude Code, Codex or Cursor. Actions: Manus, Perplexity Computer, ChatGPT Work or Comet depending on access.
WordPress developers and web agencies
Start here: For PHP, JavaScript or plugin work with access to the project files, test one of Claude Code, Codex or Cursor Agent. Use Cursor if working inside its editor suits you; evaluate Claude Code or Codex if you prefer handing over a bounded repository task. These are overlapping candidates, not a quality ranking.
Add another option when: Add Perplexity or Gemini Deep Research when a technical comparison requires current sources. For changes inside WordPress administration, evaluate an authorized connector or browser task rather than assuming a coding agent can reach the site.
You can usually skip for now: Three paid coding agents for the same routine fixes, or a general browser agent when all the required work is in local files.
Illustrative brief: Fix this form validation bug on a branch; preserve the fields; run the checks; return a diff and screenshots at desktop and mobile widths.
Accept the result only after checking: The diff, a working form on staging and the reported checks. A screenshot alone does not prove submission works.
SEO and content agencies
Start here: For source-heavy competitor or topic research, evaluate Perplexity Search/Research or Gemini Deep Research. For rewriting a client-approved brief, start with an assistant you already use, such as Claude or ChatGPT. These are different jobs; not every writing task needs a research agent.
Add another option when: Consider Manus or Perplexity Computer when the job must end in a report, presentation or dashboard. Add Grok when your brief genuinely depends on conversations and announcements on X.
You can usually skip for now: Several research subscriptions producing interchangeable reports. A coding agent is not an automatic requirement for keyword research.
Illustrative brief: Compare these five competitors’ published services and content gaps. Link every factual claim. Separate editorial opportunities from measured search-volume data.
Accept the result only after checking: Open the decisive sources. Research assistants do not replace actual analytics or keyword-volume data.
PR, social teams and journalists
Start here: Evaluate Grok when the question is about what is being said on X, who said it and how a thread developed. For broader document and web research, Perplexity is another candidate. Choose the source environment your work depends on.
Add another option when: Add a browser or execution agent only if you need a repeatable, reviewable collection or deliverable that your current research tool cannot provide.
You can usually skip for now: An X-focused workflow if the target audience is not represented there. Popular posts are not proof of market-wide opinion.
Illustrative brief: Collect first-party posts about this launch within this date range. Include original links, author and time; label reactions separately from confirmed product facts.
Accept the result only after checking: The original thread, date, identity and supporting evidence. A confident summary is not a fact-check.
Automation builders and integration agencies
Start here: Use one coding agent for custom code, API adapters or diagnosing a workflow you can inspect. For a fixed recurring process, use the workflow platform you operate; agent access to tools does not remove the need for ownership, monitoring and duplicate control.
Add another option when: Try Manus, Perplexity Computer or ChatGPT Work for an open-ended task across files and connected apps. Add this only when judgment about the next step is useful.
You can usually skip for now: A general agent for a deterministic copy-and-paste rule, or multiple agents making the same production changes.
Illustrative brief: Diagnose why this test event created two CRM records. Use the supplied logs and workflow export; propose a fix and a duplicate-event test without touching production.
Accept the result only after checking: A reproducible explanation and one record after replaying the test event. See the separate automation-tools guide for the infrastructure.
Consultants, analysts and professional services
Start here: Evaluate Perplexity or Gemini Deep Research when you need an evidence-based comparison. For analysis of supplied documents, test the assistant you already have with an authorized, representative sample.
Add another option when: Manus or Perplexity Computer can be candidates when the deliverable includes several output files or analysis steps. The need is the finished client deliverable, not another chat window.
You can usually skip for now: Paying for several similar research reports before checking whether the first one covers the question. Do not use an agent’s recommendation as the sole basis for a high-stakes professional decision.
Illustrative brief: Compare these suppliers against our supplied requirements. Cite the source and date for each capability, list unanswered questions and produce a decision table.
Accept the result only after checking: Traceability from each recommendation to a requirement and source; verify calculations independently.
Small business owners and operations teams
Start here: For drafts, summaries and instructions, begin with one familiar assistant. Consider ChatGPT Work, Comet, Manus or Perplexity Computer when the real need is action across supported websites or apps, rather than just an answer.
Add another option when: Add a connection only for the system the pilot needs. Define what may be read, what may change and what requires your approval.
You can usually skip for now: An expensive execution agent for a few occasional email drafts. If the process has fixed rules and repeats reliably, a conventional automation may be simpler.
Illustrative brief: Review these permitted enquiries and prepare a task list with missing information. Draft replies for approval; do not send them or make purchases.
Accept the result only after checking: Correct customer details, a complete task list and no unauthorized actions. Confirm account, regional and site availability before subscribing.
Designers and content creators
Start here: Use an existing assistant for a brief, storyboard or copy alternatives. For research, use a source-based assistant. Choose around your deliverable: an idea, an image, a presentation and a working app are different outputs.
Add another option when: Evaluate Manus or Perplexity Computer when you need a complete presentation or a package of research and files. Evaluate a coding agent when the deliverable is an interactive site or app you can test.
You can usually skip for now: A coding agent for copy-only work, or several general agents without a distinct output advantage. Agents do not remove the need for a suitable visual editor and rights checks.
Illustrative brief: Create a five-slide concept from this approved brief. Identify image sources and rights; keep factual claims linked to evidence; deliver an editable file.
Accept the result only after checking: Visual quality, editability, factual accuracy and licensed assets. A polished preview is not the same as a usable file.

What the named products actually do
Claude Code, Codex, Cursor Agent
These are coding-agent candidates with different working experiences. See the official documentation for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor Agent. Choose based on your repository, access and review process; not on an assumption that one is always faster.
Perplexity: Search/Research, Computer, Comet
Do not treat these as one capability. Search/Research helps gather and synthesize information; the current help page describes research modes and file creation. Computer orchestrates multi-step work and deliverables, including reports, dashboards and presentations, according to its official guide. Comet is the browser with an assistant. Check which experience, connectors and allowance your plan actually provides.
Grok
Grok deserves a place when web research and X context matter. Its research use case describes synthesizing web, X and supplied material. Developer X Search supports keyword, semantic, user and thread searches. Those API tools are not a promise that every consumer plan has the same access or automation. Check the product you intend to use.
Gemini Deep Research
Google’s guide describes a research plan, source selection and a report. It is another candidate for evidence-based investigation. Compare it with Perplexity on the same question and decisive sources rather than subscribing because the names differ.
Manus, ChatGPT Work
Manus uses a sandbox computer for multi-step deliverables. The ChatGPT Work browser guide describes supported website tasks and approval points. Alongside Perplexity Computer and Comet, these are candidates to compare when you need execution. Supported sites, authentication, account settings and file quality matter.
Meta Muse
Muse is worth watching for personal tasks, but do not confuse a launch with availability for your business. Meta’s launch announcement describes a personal agent and a US rollout. Confirm your region and account before choosing it; this guide does not claim it is available in Bulgaria.
What public examples can teach you
Rakuten: the customer story describes Kenta Naruse using Claude Code for a substantial repository implementation. The lesson is task-specific context and reviewable code, not that every business needs a coding agent.
Ascendea: Manus’s story describes Rob Arnold reserving Manus for complex work while simpler tasks stay with specialized agents. Several agents can be complementary when their responsibilities differ. This is vendor-published evidence, not our audited performance result.
Grok developer example: the official fact-checking cookbook separates claims from an X post, researches them with web and X tools, and preserves cited evidence. It is an API implementation example, not proof of an agency’s savings or automatic truth detection.
When paying for two similar products makes sense
Overlap is not automatically waste. A second option can be useful for a separate task, an independent review, a necessary connection or better output in your actual work. It may be unnecessary when both produce the same acceptable result and you rarely use the difference.
- Perplexity + Grok: complementary when web/document research and X investigation are separate needs; overlapping when both are used only for generic summaries.
- Claude Code + Codex + Cursor: compare coding outcomes and review value, not subscription count.
- Manus + Computer + ChatGPT Work + Comet: keep the ones with a distinct access or delivery advantage for your task. You do not need all four to try one browser task.
A model available inside one subscription is not necessarily the same experience as its standalone product. Compare tools, connectors, limits and the result you can actually obtain.
A simple test before buying another subscription
- Pick three representative tasks you genuinely do. Define a deliverable and what makes it correct.
- Try your current product and one alternative with the same permitted information.
- Record total time, including checking and corrections, plus usage and connection costs.
- Keep the additional option only for the recurring difference you actually use.
Illustrative arithmetic: saving 10 minutes on 12 accepted tasks saves two hours per month before setup and maintenance. That is a hypothetical calculation, not a product claim. Use your own results and the current plan price.
For the platforms that run recurring processes, read our automation tools guide. For a scoped business task, explore workflow automation. Scope, price, permissions and software costs are agreed for the task.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Do I need both Perplexity and Grok?
They can complement each other when broad web or document research and X-focused investigation are separate needs. Compare your real tasks; neither is automatically unnecessary.
What is the difference between Perplexity Research, Computer and Comet?
Search/Research gathers and synthesizes information. Computer handles multi-step work and deliverables. Comet is a browser with an assistant. Check the actual access, connectors and limits in your plan.
Which AI agent should a WordPress developer try?
For changes to accessible project files, evaluate Claude Code, Codex or Cursor on one real task. For WordPress administration actions, confirm the necessary connector or browser access separately.
When is an assistant enough instead of an execution agent?
For a draft, summary or explanation, an assistant may be enough. An execution agent becomes relevant when the job requires supported actions or multiple deliverables that you can inspect.
Should I cancel every overlapping AI subscription?
No. A second product may offer valuable review, access or a different deliverable. Measure completed tasks, correction time and cost before deciding what to keep.
